Welcome to the Northern Territory Office of Sport and Recreation's Sport Linkup web site.

This site has been developed to encourage children to get active through sporting activities, and provide information about available sports and sporting clubs throughout the Northern Territory.

It is important to encourage children to become active and enjoy physical activity.

Playing sport is a positive experience for children. To help achieve this, have a go at answering these questions, and read about some of the issues effecting parents and children in sport:

Do you actively encourage your child to give sport a go and have fun?
Do you find yourself getting mad at umpires and coaches?
Want to find out more about what kind of sport parent you are?

What are your rights and responsibilities?

When participating in sport or recreation you have a number of rights and you are also asked to be responsible for a number of things, check out what these are by visiting the Play by the Rules web site.

Play by the Rules is a free online training resource for sport and recreation organisations. Play by the Rules provides information about how to deal with inappropriate behaviour such as harassment, discrimination and victimisation in sport.

What to do if you are feeling concerned

As a parent are you uncomfortable with behaviours on the sporting field?
Do you know how to identify discrimination and harassment in sport?

The online courses are short (taking no more than two hours), may be done in part or all at once and make extensive use of cases studies.

Sport Rage

Sometimes the enjoyment of sport can be dampened due to sport rage. Sport rage can appear in many forms, from an abusive coach to an unhappy parent.

As a parent it is important to keep the following in mind when watching your child play sport:

I will:

  • Act within the rules and spirit of the game
  • Give positive comment to encourage players
  • Respect officials' and coachs' decisions
  • Keep my emotions in check
  • Thank players, coaches and officials

I won't:

  • Use bad language or harass anyone
  • Criticise or ridicule anyone's performance

Visit the Play by the Rules web site for tips on how to control sport rage at your local sporting club.
