Brief description of competition: Orienteering is all about navigating with a map using compass or navigating skills, locating markers on a set course in the quickest possible time.
There are 3 courses each event:
short(2-3km), medium (4-5km) and long(6-8km).

Orienteering can be a social outing for the family first thing in the morning or seriously competitive. Each event has a coach available for any assistance. It's a wonderful way to see parts of the top end otherwise hidden from view. A variety of orienteering events are offered, as well as cycle, relay, score and night events.

Season dates: Jan 26 - November

Where is training held: Introductory coaching briefings are held at each event for newcomers, then "on the course" training at events. Several coaching clinics are held throughout the year.

Where are competitions held?: Various bush and metropolitan locations within and around Darwin eg. East Point Reserve, Charles Darwin National Park, Rapid Creek, Holmes Jungle Reserve, Litchfield National Park.

Competition days and times: Generally the second and fifth Sundays of the month, with a few exceptions. Start time is anytime between 7am and 9am, and you must finish before 11am.

Cost per season:
Membership Fees: Individual $30, Family $45, Junior $15. (membership optional)
Event Fees: members $4 per entry, $2 for each extra person in a group; non-members $8 per entry and $2 for each extra person. Compass hire $2.

Uniform requirements: none

Is there an opportunity to compete in a nt title?: NT Championships are held every 2 years. Next one will be in August 2009. NT School Championships will be held September 2008 in a Darwin location.

What do they need to bring to competitions?: Hat, running shoes, whistle, water, compass (not essential for the shorter courses)

Would you appreciate parent volunteers?: Yes, to help with catering - bringing food, cooking BBQ.
